Sam Winchester’s Journal – Entry #36
I guess I’ll need nine lives to know exactly who Dean Winchester really is.
Today, I discovered a part of my brother’s existence that told me more about him than years sitting by his side in the car: when he was about sixteen, Dean got caught stealing food and was sent to a boys home in upstate New York. I don’t understand why Dad never explained to me what happened during those two months, why the hell he thought it was a better idea to make me believe that Dean was missing on a hunt than letting me know he was arrested for shoplifting and was serving time in juvie. What kind of father does that?
Oh, yeah. John Winchester.
But I guess he had his reasons, as usual. Even if I know retrospectively that Dad tried the best he could to do what was the best for us, some of his choices regarding our education will always remain a mystery to me. I don’t see what kind of lesson about life you can teach your twelve-year-old son by letting him wonder a whole summer if his big brother made it out alive or not from a so-called hunt involving a werewolf pack.
It doesn’t matter now anyway.
This hunt in Dean’s former juvenile home could have been another day at the office, another ghost salted and burned, another place cleared out of some random supernatural crap, but it was more than that. It showed me a part of Dean’s life I was completely unaware of, and gave me a chance to get a glimpse at the teenager he could have become if he hadn’t been “in the life”: an average high school kid who won wrestling competitions and boasted a bit to impress the girl he had a crush on without being the caricature of the “bad boy in a leather jacket” he’d become a few years later—the kid who loved school, had a bunch of friends. Dean could have stayed, he could have had what he’d wanted the most, a real home, a normal life surrounded by people like Sonny and Robin who’d truly cared about him.
But he came back.
I know why, I’m not stupid. It wasn’t for the love of hunting, traveling from town to town, changing school every two months, or doing his homework on the corner of a shitty motel table or on a bar counter surrounded by drunk bikers and hookers sporting fake leopard fur coats.
My brother asked Timmy to let his mother go because sometimes you’ve got to do what’s best for you even if it hurts the ones you love, but he never applied this advice to himself. I guess that I’ll always represent the exception that breaks Dean Winchester’s sacred rules and makes him go “Do what I say, don’t do what I do”. All this makes me wonder how many more things he did for me that I ignore. How many fake stories became “History,” as he said?
Maybe another hunt will tell me, but I’m afraid to know the real answer.
